A Lower Miocene gull (Larinae gen. indet.) (Laridae Vigors, 1825 - Charadriiformes Huxley, 1867) from Hrabarsko (W Bulgaria)

Abstract: 

А skеlеtоn of аn adult individual, included in а соаl slab is described. The layers belong to the Balsha Member of the Gnilyane Formation. Age: Middle to Upper Turolian – to Maeotian-Pontian (МN 11-13). Measurements (mm): skull length - са. 60,0; mandibula length - са. 48,0; humerus length - са. 58,8; tarsometatarsus length - са. 36,0. The tind is rather damaged because of the flattenation and former attempts to bе preserved. More precise taxonomic identitication would bе speculative. The described gull is the second water bird after Phalacrocorax serdicensis Burchak-Abr. & Nikolov, 1984, а species described from the same site and it confirms the presence of large water bodies in the Middle Miocene in this part of the country.

Боев, З. Нuжнемuоценская чайка (Larinae gen. indet.) (Laridae Vigors, 1825 - Charadriiformes Huxley, 1867) из Храбарско (Западная Болгария). Описывается скелет взрослого индивида чайки, включенный в плиту из каменного угля. Местонахождение относится к т. н. Бальшенскому члену Гнилянской свиты. Возраст находки - середина - до конца туролия - мэот-понт (МN 11-13). Размеры (mm): длина черепа - ок. 60,0; длина нижней челюсти - ок. 48,0; длина плечевой кости - ок. 58,8; длина тарзометатарзуса - ок. 36,0. Находка плохо испорчена из-за сплоскнутости, а также из-за прежных попыток ее консервирования. Более конкретное указание таксономической принадлежности является спекулятивным. Описываемая чайка является вторым водолюбивым видом птиц из этого местонахождения после описанного из него же Phalacrocorax serdicensis Burchak-Abr. & Nikolov, 1984 и подтверждает наличие крупных водных бассейнов в середине миоцена в той части страны.
