Abstract:

V. Shopov, V. Georgiev. Stratigraphy of the Quaternary sediments in the Northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea shelf. The stratigraphic sequence of the Quaternary sediments, in the sections of two engineering-geologic drill-holes in the northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea shelf, is studied. The drill-holes come down to relatively low stratigraphic levels, which correspond to the Middle Pleistocene subseries. A lithologic-biostratigraphic subdivision of the Quaternaty sediments was performed, which allowed to group them on the basis of main chronostratigraphic units – regional stages. The sediments deposited during the great stages of geohistorical development of the Black Sea area during Quaternary, having been denoted so far by a number of Soviet authors with external hierarchial terms such as horizons and beds, are now accepted to be potential regional stages. On the basis of fossil mollusc fauna, sediments of the Old-Euxinian and Uzunlarian regional stages, of the Upper New-Euxinian substage and of the Black Sea regional stage, were established in the section of the two drill-holes. Sediments of the Karangatian regional stage have not been established. Their absence is explained by the almost ubiquitous wash-out of these sediments during the time of the Post-Karangatian regression in the area of the Bulgarian Black Sea shelf.
